Donkey milk is significantly lower in fat and protein than camel milk, but contains more lactose and therefore tastes milder and sweeter. Camel milk is richer, slightly salty in taste and usually comes from desert regions. Both are rarities in Europe. Here you will find the detailed comparison.
Nutritional values compared
The values are guidelines per 100 ml. As natural products, both types of milk vary depending on the animal, breed, feed and lactation phase.

|---|---|---|---|
| Energy | 35–45 kcal | 60–70 kcal | approx. 65 kcal |

What the differences mean
- Fat: Donkey milk is very low in fat and therefore thin. Camel milk is roughly in the range of cow milk.
- Protein: Camel milk contains about twice as much protein as donkey milk.
- Lactose: Donkey milk contains more lactose than camel and cow milk. It is therefore not a low-lactose milk.
- Calories: Due to its low fat content, donkey milk has fewer calories.
Both types of milk contain milk protein and lactose. If you have a milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance, please consult a doctor beforehand. More in Donkey milk and lactose intolerance.

Origin and production
Camel milk comes mainly from regions in North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, where camels are traditionally kept. In Europe, there are only a few camel farms.
Donkey milk is produced in Europe on small farms, for example in Italy and the Balkans. A donkey only gives milk while it has a foal. The foal drinks first, and it is milked by hand and only in small quantities. More in How is donkey milk produced?

Which milk is right for you?
- Donkey milk, if you are looking for a very mild, low-fat milk with a slight sweetness and appreciate its European origin.
