Miniature donkeys, also known as miniature donkeys, are donkeys with a height of under approximately 90 cm. They usually weigh around 100 to 200 kg, often live over 30 years like their larger relatives, and need companionship, care, and the right feed just as much. So small does not mean easy-care – but very lovable.

Miniature donkeys are considered curious, friendly, and people-oriented. At the same time, they are real donkeys: They examine new things thoroughly, cannot be rushed, and have a mind of their own. Anyone who works with patience has a loyal companion. More in Are donkeys stubborn?
Keeping: What miniature donkeys need
- Companionship: At least one other donkey. More in Why donkeys need companionship.
- Exercise: Movement on firm, dry ground – miniature donkeys are not garden decorations.
- Shelter: dry and sheltered from the wind, with a bedding area.
- Hoof care: regularly, for example every 6–10 weeks. More in Donkey hoof care.
- Dental check: at least annually. More in Donkey dental care.
The biggest danger: too much feed
Especially because miniature donkeys are so cute, they often get too much – too much grass, too many treats, too much hay. But their small bodies are designed for sparse feed. This is why obesity is one of the most common problems and is closely linked to laminitis. More in How much does a donkey eat? and Laminitis in donkeys.
Miniature donkeys and children
Miniature donkeys are an experience for children. To ensure that things go well for both sides, clear rules apply: approach calmly, not from behind, only feed with permission, and always under adult supervision. Miniature donkeys are not intended for riding. More tips in Visiting a donkey farm.
