Healthy hooves are the foundation for movement and well-being in donkeys. Donkey hooves are smaller, steeper and more robust than horse hooves – but they too grow continuously and need regular care.
How often do donkey hooves need to be trimmed?
The guideline is an interval of about 6 to 10 weeks. The actual requirement depends on the ground, exercise and the individual animal. The trimming is carried out by hoof trimmers or farriers with experience with donkeys. Most donkeys walk without shoes.
What is part of everyday care
- Pick out the hooves: Regularly remove stones and dirt.
- Check: look out for cracks, smell, heat or sensitivity.
- Practice giving the hooves: A donkey that calmly gives its hooves makes every appointment easier.
- Keep an eye on the ground: Constant wetness softens the horn.
Why the ground is so important
Donkeys come from dry regions. Their hooves are adapted to firm, dry ground. Mud and permanently damp bedding can strain the hoof horn. More on this in Sand instead of lush meadow and Donkeys in winter.
Warning signs
- lameness or cautious, stiff walking
- noticeably warm hooves or a distinct pulse in the fetlock area
- frequent lying down or shifting weight to the back
Such signs can indicate laminitis or other problems and should be seen by a veterinarian promptly. More on this in Laminitis in donkeys.
