There is no single “donkey”: Depending on the breed, size and weight vary enormously. Size is measured as the withers height, i.e., from the ground to the highest point of the withers.
Size classes at a glance
- Miniature donkey: under approx. 90 cm withers height, often around 100–200 kg.
- Medium-sized domestic donkey: approx. 90–130 cm, often 180–300 kg.
- Large donkey: approx. 130–160 cm, up to around 480 kg depending on the breed. This includes the French Poitou donkey with its long, shaggy coat.
These figures are rough estimates. Individual animals may be above or below them. You can read more about the breeds in the post Donkey breeds at a glance.
Accurately estimating weight
Donkeys often appear lighter or heavier than they are due to their coat and build. A livestock scale is the most accurate. Alternatively, there are special measuring tapes and formulas that estimate weight based on chest circumference and body length. Regular weighing helps to detect changes early.
When is a donkey fully grown?
Donkeys grow slowly. Many are not considered fully grown until they are about 4 to 5 years old. You can find out how old donkeys can live in the post How old does a donkey live?
