Only a little – and preferably not at all. A single fresh lettuce leaf usually won't cause any harm to your donkey. But it won't do much good either, because lettuce consists almost entirely of water. Lettuce scraps with dressing or onions, wilted or rotten lettuce, and kitchen waste are off-limits.

Short answerOnly a little, preferably not
QuantityAt most one fresh leaf, rarely
WarningNever with dressing or onions, never wilted, no kitchen waste

Why lettuce makes little sense for donkeys

Donkeys come from barren regions. Their digestive system is designed for high-fiber, low-energy, low-sugar feed. They are adapted to chew straw, high-structure hay, and lean plants for many hours a day.

Cultivated lettuce doesn't fit in. It is tender, high in water, and contains almost no fiber. It doesn't fill them up and offers nothing to chew. Larger quantities of water-rich food can also upset their digestion. Green is not the same as grass – and certainly not the same as straw.

Unlike apples or bananas, sugar is not the main issue with lettuce. The problem is different: lettuce simply has no place in a donkey's feeding plan. If you want to do something good for your donkey, make sure you provide good basic feed. You can read what goes with that in our post on Basic feed for donkeys: Hay, straw, and pasture.

The real risk: Lettuce scraps and kitchen waste

A fresh lettuce leaf is rarely the problem. It becomes difficult when lettuce is intended for waste disposal. The bucket of vegetable scraps that is tipped over the fence "for the donkeys" is a real risk:

  • Dressing and oil: Vinegar, oil, salt, mustard, sugar, and spices do not belong in a donkey's stomach.
  • Onions: They are in many salads and are considered unsuitable for equines.
  • Wilted or rotten lettuce: Lettuce spoils quickly. It begins to ferment and can grow mold.
  • Unknown mixtures: Kitchen waste often contains things you don't see at first glance – such as bread scraps, tomatoes, or potato peels. Why these do not belong in the feed, we explain in Can donkeys eat tomatoes? and Can donkeys eat bread?.

That is why: donkeys are not waste disposers. Kitchen waste belongs in the trash or on the compost – and the compost does not belong within the donkeys' reach. If you live on a pasture with walkers, you should hang up a sign "Please do not feed". How to design your donkey area sensibly, you can read in the post on Donkey keeping with sand instead of pasture.

If you do give a lettuce leaf

If you want to offer your donkey a lettuce leaf as an exception, stick to a few simple rules:

  • Only use fresh, crisp lettuce and wash it thoroughly.
  • At most one leaf, not daily, and never as a replacement for roughage.
  • Give it from the flat of your hand so that your donkey eats calmly.
  • Never feed other donkeys on pastures or farms without the owners' permission – not even with lettuce.

If you are occasionally looking for a small treat with a bit more bite, you are better off reaching for a few lengthwise cut cucumber strips – more on this in Can donkeys eat cucumbers?. You can find an overview of all feed in What donkeys are allowed to eat: the complete feed list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is lettuce for donkeys like grass?

No. Cultivated lettuce is much higher in water and lower in fiber than the lean plants that donkeys are adapted to. By the way, grass from the lawn is also not suitable feed, see Can donkeys eat lawn clippings?.

Can donkeys eat lettuce scraps from lunch?

No. Prepared salad contains dressing, often onions, and other ingredients. Lettuce scraps do not belong in the feed trough.

Can donkeys eat the lettuce stalk?

No. The stalk is hard and bulky and is difficult to chew. It belongs in the trash or on the compost.

My donkey ate lettuce scraps with dressing – what should I do?

Observe him in the next few hours: Is he eating normally, passing stool, behaving as usual? In case of restlessness, lack of appetite, or other abnormalities, call your veterinarian. If onions were included or it was a larger quantity, you can also call as a precaution.

This post provides general guidance on feeding donkeys. If you have questions about your animal, or in case of pre-existing conditions or abnormalities, please contact your veterinarian.
