No. Bread does not belong in a donkey's feed trough – not even dry or hard bread. Bread contains a lot of starch and often sugar, can clump in the digestive tract, and molds quickly. For donkeys, whose digestion is designed for sparse, high-fiber feed, bread is unsuitable.
Why bread is unsuitable for donkeys
Donkeys come from sparse regions. Their digestive system is designed to slowly process high-fiber, low-energy, and low-sugar feed. Donkeys are not small horses: What is rich for a horse is usually too much for a donkey. Bread does not fit this picture in any way.
- Lots of starch and sugar: Bread consists mainly of grain starch, and many varieties also contain sugar. Too much sugar and starch promote obesity and are considered a major risk for laminitis in donkeys.
- Clumping: Bread swells with saliva and liquid and can form a tough paste. This can promote esophageal blockages and colic.
- Mold: Bread molds quickly, often invisibly on the inside. Moldy feed is generally unsuitable for donkeys.
- Additives: Salt, yeast, spices, seeds, raisins, or chocolate have no place in donkey feed.
- Begging: Donkeys quickly learn that people at the fence have bread. They become pushy, crowd, and snap.

Not even dry or hard bread
Many people believe that old, hardened bread is a good way to use it up for animals. This is not true for donkeys. Dry bread contains just as much starch as fresh bread, only less water. It swells in the digestive tract, and hard pieces can get stuck when swallowed hastily. In addition, there is the risk of mold in stored bread.

|---|---|

Visitors at the fence: What you can do
Most people who give a donkey bread mean well. They simply do not know that bread is unsuitable for donkeys. If you keep donkeys, a few simple measures help:
- A clearly visible, friendly sign at the fence: “Please do not feed – not even bread. Thank you!”
- Briefly and calmly explain why bread is unsuitable for donkeys.
- Offer an alternative: look, take a photo, and – if the donkey likes it and you agree – pet it.
- If the pasture borders a path, a second fence with some distance can help.
And if you happen to pass by a pasture yourself: Never feed unfamiliar donkeys without the owner's permission. You do not know if an animal currently needs special feeding.
What donkeys eat instead
The basis is roughage: barley straw or oat straw, supplemented by late-cut, high-structure hay. In addition, there is limited, lean pasture, fresh water at all times, and salt or mineral feed as needed in consultation with the veterinarian. We explain this in detail under Donkey Feed: Hay, Straw, and Basic Feed.
If you would like to give your donkey a treat occasionally, a small piece of apple or carrot is possible – rarely, in small amounts, and cut into wedges or strips lengthwise. Corn is also not an alternative because of its starch content.
What to do if the donkey has eaten bread after all?
Remove all remaining bread pieces from your donkey's reach. Then observe it carefully: Is it eating normally, passing stool, and behaving as usual? Also watch for difficulty swallowing, gagging, or drooling.
If you notice anything, such as restlessness, lack of appetite, frequent lying down, or other signs of colic, call your veterinarian. Do not try to treat it yourself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can donkeys eat dried bread?
No. Dried bread contains just as much starch as fresh bread, swells up, and can get stuck when swallowed. In addition, there is the risk of mold in stored bread.
Is a small piece of bread bad?
A single piece does not necessarily lead to problems. However, there is no reason to feed donkeys bread. Many small pieces from many visitors quickly add up to a large amount.
Can donkeys eat bread rolls, hardtack, or rusks?
No. The same applies to all baked goods as to bread: lots of starch, often sugar and salt, and no benefit for the donkey.
What to do with stale bread if it cannot be given to donkeys?
Plan your shopping so that as little as possible is left over, or use up leftovers in your own kitchen. Stale bread does not belong in a donkey's feed trough.
