Yes, donkeys can eat cucumbers – but only occasionally, in small quantities and cut into lengthwise strips. Cucumbers are low in sugar and consist mostly of water. This makes them a relatively harmless treat. However, they are not feed: straw and hay cannot be replaced by a cucumber.

Short answerYes, but only occasionally and in small amounts
QuantityA handful of narrow strips, not daily
CautionNo round slices, no sour or bitter cucumbers

Why cucumbers are generally unproblematic as treats

Donkeys come from barren regions. Their digestive system is designed for high-fiber, low-energy, and low-sugar feed: straw, structurally rich hay, and lean pasture. Anything sweet falls outside this pattern. Too much sugar and starch promote obesity and are considered a major risk for laminitis in donkeys.

This is exactly where the cucumber has an advantage. It contains significantly less sugar than apples, carrots, or bananas. That is why someone who wants to give a donkey something from their hand occasionally will often reach for a cucumber instead of sweet fruit.

But low in sugar does not mean "as much as you want". A cucumber provides hardly any fiber and no structure to chew. It does not satisfy, occupies your donkey for only a few seconds, and replaces no roughage. Larger quantities of water-rich fresh feed at once can also upset the digestion. Donkeys are not little horses – and certainly not vegetarians.

How to prepare cucumber properly

  • Fresh and crisp: Only use flawless cucumbers. Soft, slimy, or moldy areas do not belong in the trough.
  • Wash thoroughly: The skin can stay on if you wash it beforehand.
  • Cut lengthwise: Cut the cucumber lengthwise into narrow strips. No round slices, no thick cubes, and never a whole cucumber – round or large pieces can get stuck in the throat.
  • Small portion: A handful of strips is completely sufficient. Not daily, but as an occasional reward.
  • Taste beforehand: If a cucumber tastes bitter, sort it out. Bitter substances in cucumbers and related cucurbits are already intolerable to us humans.

Give the strips from the flat hand or place them between the roughage. This way, your donkey eats calmly and does not wolf it down.

Cucumbers are not all the same

In the supermarket, in the garden, and in the kitchen, you encounter cucumbers in many forms. Not all are suitable for donkeys:

Form For donkeys? Note
Fresh salad cucumber Occasionally and in small amounts Wash, cut lengthwise into narrow strips
Snack or mini cucumbers Occasionally and in small amounts Cut lengthwise into quarters, never give whole
Sour cucumbers, gherkins No Salt, vinegar, and spices have no place in donkey feed
Bitter-tasting cucumbers No Sort out
Prepared cucumber salad No Dressing, oil, onions, spices
Cucumber plant, leaves, vines No No feed – keep beds out of reach

The point about cucumber salad applies to all salad leftovers from the kitchen. Why, we explain in detail in the post Can donkeys eat salad?.

Better alternatives and the right place for treats

Treats are a reward for donkeys, not a component of their feed. This also applies to the low-sugar cucumber. If your donkey is overweight or has had laminitis before, it is better to avoid treats altogether and discuss the feeding plan with your veterinarian.

If you still want to give something occasionally, there are a few proven little things besides cucumber:

Both are sweeter than cucumber and therefore should be used even more sparingly. Much more important than any treat is the foundation: high-fiber roughage, limited pasture, and fresh water at all times. An overview is given by What donkeys are allowed to eat: the complete feed list.

And one more point that is important on walks: Never feed strange donkeys on pastures or farms without the owner's permission – not even with cucumber. You do not know if the animal has feed restrictions or has already received something from other visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can donkeys eat cucumber skin?

Yes. The skin can stay on the cucumber. Wash it thoroughly beforehand and cut the cucumber lengthwise into strips as usual.

Can donkeys eat sour cucumbers or gherkins?

No. Pickled cucumbers contain salt, vinegar, sugar, and spices. This does not suit the digestion of donkeys. The cucumber brine also does not belong in the trough.

Can donkeys eat zucchini?

Zucchini is related to the cucumber. If at all, the same rules apply: occasionally, in small amounts, cut lengthwise. Consistently sort out zucchini that tastes bitter.

My donkey got a whole cucumber – now what?

Stay calm and observe your donkey in the following hours: Is he eating normally, passing stool, behaving as always? Does he seem restless, stop eating, or show other abnormalities? Call your veterinarian.

This post provides general guidance on feeding donkeys. If you have questions about your animal, pre-existing conditions, or abnormalities, please contact your veterinarian.
