Yes, donkeys can eat carrots – but only occasionally and in small amounts. A small carrot cut lengthwise into thin strips is fine as an occasional reward. As a daily treat or in larger quantities, carrots are not suitable for donkeys because they contain more sugar than many people think.

Short answerYes, but only occasionally and in small amounts.
QuantityA small piece, cut lengthwise into strips – not daily.
CautionNo whole carrots and no round slices. If the donkey is overweight or has a history of laminitis, it is best to avoid them altogether.

Why carrots are not a daily treat

Carrots are considered a classic treat for horses. But donkeys are not little horses. They come from barren regions, and their digestive system is designed for high-fiber, low-energy, low-sugar feed. Even small amounts of additional energy make themselves felt.

Carrots taste sweet because they contain sugar. An occasional piece is not a problem for a donkey that is otherwise fed sparingly. But if there are carrots every day, it adds up. Too much sugar and starch, as well as overly rich feed, promote obesity and are considered a major risk factor for laminitis in donkeys. Colic can also be encouraged by improper feeding.

Carrots are therefore a reward, not a component of their feed. You can find a classification of all common feed items in our overview What donkeys can eat: the complete feed list.

Cutting carrots correctly: always lengthwise

With carrots, the shape is particularly important. Round slices are quick to cut, but they can get stuck in the throat if the donkey swallows them hastily. The same applies to whole carrots, which a donkey bites off and swallows in large chunks.

  • Wash the carrot and remove any soil, wilted, or rotten areas.
  • Cut off the green top and the hard stem end.
  • Cut the carrot in half lengthwise and then cut it lengthwise into thin strips.
  • No round slices, no cubes, no whole carrots.
  • Only offer a small piece, for example, a handful of thin strips from a small carrot.
Shape Suitable? Why
Lengthwise cut strips Yes They are chewed and easy to swallow.
Round slices No Can get stuck in the throat.
Whole carrot No Large chunks, too much sugar at once.
Cooked or seasoned No Kitchen scraps do not belong in the feed trough.

What else you should pay attention to

  • Not daily: If carrots become a ritual, the donkey will soon demand them. This leads to begging and pestering.
  • No sacks full of carrots: Large quantities of feed carrots are not suitable for donkeys, even if they are inexpensive to obtain.
  • Inform visitors: If several people give "just one carrot," it quickly adds up to a large amount. A friendly sign saying "Please do not feed" helps.
  • Never feed other donkeys without permission: You do not know if an animal needs special feeding at the moment.
  • Caution with at-risk animals: Overweight donkeys or donkeys that have had laminitis before should preferably not get any carrots at all.

Better alternatives to carrots

The basis of donkey feeding remains roughage: straw as a foundation, supplemented by high-structure hay, limited, lean pasture, and fresh water at all times. You can read how this looks in everyday life under Donkey feed: hay, straw, and basic feed.

Attention, scratching, or brushing are often enough as a reward. If it is to be a treat, the same rules apply to apples and cucumbers: occasionally, in small amounts, and cut correctly. Bread, on the other hand, is not an alternative.

What to do if the donkey has eaten a lot of carrots?

First, remove all remaining carrots. Then observe your donkey over the next few hours: Is it eating normally, passing droppings, and moving as usual? Also pay attention to whether it shows any difficulty swallowing.

If you notice anything unusual, such as restlessness, loss of appetite, drooling, frequent lying down, or a stiff gait, call your veterinarian. Do not try to treat it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can donkeys have a carrot every day?

No. Carrots are an occasional reward. If fed daily, the sugar adds up, and the donkey gets used to begging.

Why should I cut carrots lengthwise?

Round slices and large pieces can get stuck in the throat if the donkey swallows hastily. Narrow strips cut lengthwise are more likely to be chewed.

Can donkeys eat cooked carrots?

No. Cooked, seasoned, or salted carrots are kitchen scraps. They do not belong in the feed trough, nor do any other food scraps.

What is better for donkeys: apples or carrots?

Both contain sugar and are only suitable occasionally and in small amounts. More important than the type is that treats remain the exception.
