Donkey milk can be used in everyday life much like other milk – in coffee, muesli, or on its own. If you eat mindfully, one thing is especially important: knowing the portion size. Donkey milk is not a tool for weight control. Here you will find out what is in typical portions and how to enjoy donkey milk.
What is in a serving of donkey milk
Per 100 ml, donkey milk provides approximately 35 to 45 kcal, usually less than 1 g of fat, around 1.5 to 1.9 g of protein, and about 6 to 7 g of lactose. This results in approximately the following values for typical everyday portions:
| Portion | Energy (approx.) | Lactose (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Splash in coffee (30 ml) | 10–14 kcal | 1.8–2.1 g |
| Muesli or porridge (150 ml) | 53–68 kcal | 9–10.5 g |
| One glass on its own (200 ml) | 70–90 kcal | 12–14 g |
The figures are guidelines. Donkey milk is a natural product, and its composition varies. The information on the label is binding. Also note: With about 6 to 7 g per 100 ml, donkey milk contains more milk sugar than cow milk, which has around 4.7 g.
Ideas for everyday use
Donkey milk tastes mild and slightly sweet. That is why it works in many recipes without additional sweetening – that is a matter of taste, not a promise. A few simple ideas:
- In coffee or tea: Even a small splash noticeably changes the taste. This way you only need a little milk.
- In porridge: Cook oats with water and stir in some donkey milk at the end. Finish with berries or cinnamon.
- In a smoothie: Mix donkey milk with fruit of your choice. Remember that the fruit also brings energy.
- On its own and well chilled: A small glass of donkey milk as a mindful moment of enjoyment – for example in the afternoon.

Portioning: fresh or as powder
You store frozen donkey milk at −18 °C. To thaw it, place it slowly in the refrigerator (2–7 °C). This way you can plan well when you need which quantity. All details on storage are in the post Thawing and storing donkey milk. Please always also pay attention to the information on the label.
Donkey milk powder is freeze-dried and can be portioned particularly precisely. Rule of thumb: 10 g of powder and 90 ml of water yield approximately 100 ml of ready-to-drink milk. Accordingly, less is sufficient for a splash in coffee. How you mix the powder, you can read in the mixing ratio instructions.
- Think about what you would like to use the donkey milk for today – coffee, muesli, or on its own.
- Measure out the appropriate quantity or weigh out the powder.
- Calculate the remaining ingredients if you are keeping an eye on your energy intake.
- Enjoy mindfully – and note down which quantity suits you well.
Enjoy mindfully instead of believing promises
Many claims circulate about donkey milk: It is said to make you feel full, stimulate the metabolism, or support weight loss. There are clear legal rules for such statements about food, and no corresponding claim is approved for donkey milk. We therefore consciously refrain from it.
What remains is honest and sufficient: Donkey milk is a rare food. A donkey gives only about 1 to 2 liters of milk per day in addition to her foal, and it is milked by hand in small quantities. Many therefore enjoy it very consciously. If you would like to change your weight specifically, speak with your doctor or a qualified nutrition professional.
