Few animal sounds are as well known as the donkey's "hee-haw". It is loud, can be heard from afar – and has its reasons.
How the "hee-haw" is produced
Donkeys produce their call both when inhaling and exhaling. This results in the typical alternation between the high "hee" and the low "haw".
Why donkeys call so loudly
The ancestors of our domestic donkeys lived in vast, barren landscapes, where animals were often widely scattered while searching for food. A call that carries over great distances helped to maintain contact with fellow donkeys.
Typical occasions
- Contact: A donkey calls for herd members who are out of sight.
- Anticipation: Many donkeys call when they see familiar people or when feeding time approaches.
- Excitement: Unusual situations, unfamiliar animals or noises can trigger calling.
- Mating season: Stallions call significantly more often.
Does a donkey call unusually often?
Every donkey has its own temperament. However, if the calling behavior suddenly changes significantly, it is worth taking a closer look at housing, feeding and companionship – and if in doubt, seeking a veterinary check-up.
