A mnemonic is a memory aid: a short sentence, rhyme, or image that makes it easier to memorize difficult content. “Never wash without soap” for the cardinal directions is one of the best-known examples. But where does the expression come from – and what do real donkeys have to do with it? More than you might think.
What does mnemonic mean?
A mnemonic “builds” a detour to the goal: Instead of memorizing a piece of information directly, you link it with something that is easier to remember. This can be a sentence whose initial letters represent a sequence, a rhyme, a short story, or an image in your mind. The term has long been in common use in German and is used from primary school through university.
Where does the expression come from?
There are two explanations for its origin that complement each other well:
1. The Latin “pons asinorum”
In medieval scholarly circles, people spoke of the pons asinorum, the “bridge of the donkeys.” This referred to aids in logic and geometry that were intended to help even less experienced students over a difficult section. The slightly pointed undertone is still embedded in the word today: The bridge is built for those who cannot manage the direct route.
2. The real donkey at the stream
The second explanation comes directly from everyday life with donkeys: Donkeys dislike going through water whose depth and bottom they cannot assess. A stream that a horse can simply cross can be a real obstacle for a donkey. Those who worked with pack donkeys sometimes built small bridges or took detours – a bridge for the donkey, in short.
There is no stupidity behind this, but rather caution: Donkeys come from dry, rocky regions and check out the unknown before entering it. Find out more in the post Are donkeys stubborn? and in How smart are donkeys?
The best-known mnemonics
| Topic | Mnemonic | What you remember |
|---|---|---|
| Cardinal directions | “Never wash without soap” | North, East, South, West clockwise |
| Planets | “My father explains our night sky to me every Sunday” | Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune |
| Spelling | “Anyone who writes ‘nämlich’ with an h is daft” | nämlich without an h |
| Month lengths | Knuckle method: Knuckle = 31 days, valley = 30 days (except February) | which months have 30 or 31 days |
| Time change | “In spring, you put the garden furniture in front of the house; in autumn, back in the shed.” | Spring: clock one hour forward, autumn: one hour back |
| Traffic | “Right before left” | Right of way at equal-ranking intersections |
Good to know: The old rule “Never separate st, because it hurts them” no longer applies since the spelling reform. Today, for example, you separate “Fens-ter.” So mnemonics also have an expiration date.
How to create your own mnemonics
- Use initial letters: Form a memorable sentence from a sequence.
- Rhyme: Rhymes stick better than bare facts.
- Create images: The crazier the image in your mind, the easier you will remember it.
- Tell stories: Incorporate terms into a short plot.
- Link locations: Mentally “place” content in fixed spots in your home.

We naturally have a mnemonic too – and that is for the proper handling of our frozen donkey milk:

Frequently Asked Questions
Is “mnemonic” meant to be derogatory?
Originally, it carried a slight tone of mockery. Today, the term is used neutrally for any kind of memory aid.
What is mnemonic called in English?
Usually, people speak of a mnemonic. The expression pons asinorum is used in English primarily for a difficult initial hurdle.
Why do mnemonics work?
They link new information with familiar images, sounds, or stories. Such associations are easier to recall than individual facts.
Do donkeys really not walk over water?
Many donkeys hesitate before water whose depth they cannot see. But with patience, confidence, and a role model, they learn to master such sections too.
