Potatoes are a staple food for us, but they are unsuitable for donkeys. The short answer is: No, donkeys should not eat potatoes – neither raw nor cooked, nor any skins or scraps.
Why potatoes are forbidden
- Solanine: Raw potatoes, especially green spots, sprouts, and skins, contain solanine. This substance is toxic to animals and humans.
- Starch: Potatoes consist largely of starch. Donkeys are adapted to high-fiber, low-energy roughage.
- Kitchen scraps: Seasoned or cooked scraps have no place in donkey feed.
What to do if a donkey has eaten potatoes?
In the event of large quantities, green potatoes, or sprouts, and if you notice any abnormalities, contact your veterinarian promptly.
