For horses, oats are a classic energy feed. It is different with donkeys: Most donkeys do not need oats. Their digestive system is adapted to high-fiber, low-energy roughage.
Why donkeys eat differently than horses
Donkeys come from barren regions and make very good use of low-energy, high-fiber feed. If they get too much high-energy feed such as grain, they easily gain weight. Overweight is considered a common problem in donkeys and can have serious health consequences.
What donkeys need instead
- Barley straw or oat straw as a high-fiber base
- Hay in an appropriate quantity
- limited, controlled grazing
- mineral feed as needed
- fresh water at all times
Important: Oat straw is not the same as oats. The straw is high in fiber and low in energy, while the grain is high in energy.
When energy feed can be an issue
For very old animals, animals with dental problems, lactating mares, or donkeys with high work output, the requirement may be higher. Whether and which supplementary feed is useful is best clarified with the veterinarian.
