In autumn, the question naturally arises: Can donkeys eat pumpkin? The short answer: edible pumpkin in small quantities as an occasional treat, yes – ornamental pumpkins, on the other hand, no.
Why ornamental pumpkins are taboo
Ornamental pumpkins can contain bitter substances (cucurbitacins) that are toxic to humans and animals. Halloween pumpkins that have been sitting outside for days should also not be fed – they can mold or spoil.
How to offer edible pumpkin
- Check the variety: Only use known edible pumpkins such as Hokkaido or butternut.
- Fresh and flawless: No dents, no mold, not bitter.
- Raw and cut into small pieces: Cut into pieces that are easy to chew.
- Give a little: Only a small handful as a treat, not as a meal.
- Introduce slowly: Always try new feed in small quantities.
Why only a little?
Donkeys are roughage eaters and are accustomed to high-fiber, rather low-energy feed. Fruit and vegetables contain sugar and starch and are therefore only intended as a small reward. You can find an overview in the post What can donkeys eat?
