Donkey milk is available in various forms: as frozen fresh milk, as freeze-dried powder, and also in capsules. But how do these forms differ, and which one is right for you? In short: You use fresh milk and powder like a food in a glass or in the kitchen. Capsules contain only very small amounts and are usually sold as dietary supplements. In this post, we objectively compare the three forms – with a simple conversion.
Form 1: Fresh donkey milk, frozen
Fresh donkey milk is the original form. It is milked by hand or in small quantities, frozen, and delivered frozen. At DON DONKEY'S, it is laboratory tested in Germany. At home, you store it at −18 °C and thaw it slowly in the refrigerator at 2–7 °C.
This form is especially suitable if you want to experience the original taste: mild, slightly sweet, and rather thin. You drink it pure, in coffee, or use it in recipes. The disadvantage: You need space in the freezer and should plan the thawing a bit.
Form 2: Donkey milk powder, freeze-dried
For donkey milk powder, donkey milk is freeze-dried. During this process, the water is removed from the frozen milk under vacuum. 10 g of powder and 90 ml of water yield about 100 ml of donkey milk. The powder does not need a freezer and is practical for on the go or for travel.
You can mix it fresh and drink it or use it in muesli, smoothies, and baked goods. How best to mix it, we explain in the post How to properly prepare donkey milk powder.
Form 3: Capsules with donkey milk powder
In stores, there are also capsules containing donkey milk powder. They are usually offered as dietary supplements. Dietary supplements are legally foods in dosed form, such as capsules, tablets, or powder sachets. They are subject to their own labeling rules, for example, a recommended daily intake.
Depending on the size, a capsule usually only contains a few hundred milligrams of powder. Mathematically, 1 g of powder corresponds to about 10 ml of milk. A capsule with 0.5 g of powder thus corresponds to about 5 ml of donkey milk. That is about one teaspoon. Anyone who wants to enjoy donkey milk as a drink will hardly get far with capsules.
