Short and honest: Donkey milk does not "detoxify" – and this applies to no food. The term "detox" is a marketing term without a fixed meaning, and there is no approved claim for detoxification for food. In this post, we explain why we do not use the term and how you can objectively classify donkey milk instead.
What is behind "detox"
"Detox" is the short form of the English word for detoxification. In marketing, the term is used for juices, teas, cures, and much more. There is no uniform definition. Usually, the idea is associated with the body accumulating "toxins" or "poisons" that can be gotten rid of with certain foods.
This idea is not proven. The body has its own organs and processes that process and excrete metabolic products – such as the liver and kidneys. A single food does not replace or accelerate these processes.
Behind many detox offers is more of a feeling than a measurable process: the desire for a new beginning, for more conscious eating and some rest. This desire is completely understandable. But it does not need detoxification promises – or any food that supposedly can do more than it is.
Why food cannot be advertised with "detoxification"
In the EU, food may only be advertised with health claims that are scientifically proven and officially approved. There is no such approval for "detoxification", "intestinal cleansing" or a "balanced acid-base balance" through a specific food – not even for donkey milk.
That is why you will not find any detox promises here. This also applies to seemingly cautious formulations such as "gentle support" or "many report". Personal testimonials are also not evidence and are not used by us as an argument.
Common claims briefly classified
- "Donkey milk is prebiotic": We do not make this statement. There is no approved claim for donkey milk regarding intestinal flora.
- "Donkey milk is alkaline": We do not claim that either. The concept of "alkaline foods" as a marketing argument is not proven.
- "Donkey milk relieves the liver": There is no basis for this. For questions about the liver, your doctor is responsible.
- "Donkey milk is gentle on the stomach": Whether a food is tolerated is individual. Donkey milk contains milk protein and rather more lactose than cow milk.
- "Donkey milk provides energy for the cure": Donkey milk provides about 35 to 45 kcal per 100 ml – just like any food provides energy. No special effect is associated with this.
What donkey milk objectively is
Without marketing terms, a clear picture remains: donkey milk is a rare milk that is milked by hand or in small quantities. A donkey gives only about 1 to 2 liters per day in addition to her foal. The typical values per 100 ml:
| Nutrient | per 100 ml (approximately) |
|---|---|
| Energy | 35–45 kcal |
| Fat | 0.3–1.8 g (mostly under 1 g) |
| Protein | 1.5–1.9 g |
| Lactose | 6–7 g (cow milk: approx. 4.7 g) |
| Calcium | 60–90 mg |
In addition, donkey milk naturally contains lysozyme and lactoferrin, two protein components that occur in milk. We list them as ingredients, not as a reason for an effect. Donkey milk is primarily studied scientifically because of its composition; you can find an overview on our page Donkey milk in research.
Fasting, time out, dietary change
If you are planning a period of fasting, a dietary change, or a conscious time out, please speak with your doctor beforehand. This is especially important with pre-existing conditions, regular medication intake, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Good to know: donkey milk provides energy and milk sugar. It is therefore not a "neutral" drink like water or unsweetened tea. Whether it fits into your plan depends on its rules and your personal situation.
Regardless of cures and programs: donkey milk is a special food that many consciously enjoy in small quantities – as a treat, not as a means to an end.
