Donkeys come from warm, dry regions and generally cope better with heat than with wet conditions. Nevertheless, summer requires its own preparation – especially when it comes to shade, water, flies, and grazing.
Shade and Shelter
Trees or an airy shelter protect from the blazing sun. The shelter, which protects from wetness in winter, serves as a shaded area and a retreat from insects in summer.
Water
Donkeys drink significantly more in warm weather. Many donkeys are picky and dislike drinking dirty water. Therefore, keep the water troughs clean and check them several times a day.
Flies and Insects
- Fly masks protect the eyes and ears.
- Regular mucking out reduces breeding sites.
- A shaded, airy shelter offers a retreat.
If a donkey reacts with severe itching, bald patches, or skin changes, a veterinarian should take a look.
Summer Grazing
Summer grass can be very nutritious. For donkeys accustomed to sparse feed, this can quickly be too much. Many owners therefore limit grazing time or opt for sand and dry paddocks. More on this in Sand Instead of Lush Pasture and Laminitis in Donkeys.
Coat in Summer
In spring, donkeys lose their thick winter coat. You can read about how to support the shedding process in Shedding in Donkeys.
