In summer, it’s natural to wonder: Can a donkey have a strawberry too? The short answer: One or two strawberries as an occasional treat are generally fine for healthy donkeys. But they shouldn’t have more than that.
Why only a little?
Donkeys are adapted to high-fiber, low-energy feed. Fruit contains sugar and can contribute to obesity if fed regularly. Obesity is considered a common problem in donkeys and is linked to laminitis. Find out more in Laminitis in Donkeys.
How to offer strawberries
- Fresh and flawless: No moldy or mushy fruit.
- Wash: Rinse the strawberries beforehand.
- Keep it small: One or two pieces are enough.
- Not every day: As an exception and reward, not as a habit.
When to avoid them
For overweight donkeys, animals with a history of laminitis, or metabolic problems, it is better to avoid fruit altogether. In these cases, discuss feeding with your veterinarian.
