Donkey milk is a food product – also during pregnancy and breastfeeding. No special benefits for mother or child can be derived from this. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and would like to try donkey milk, speak with your doctor or midwife beforehand and follow the instructions on the label.
Donkey milk during pregnancy: a factual overview
During pregnancy, many women pay particular attention to their diet. Which foods are suitable during this time is an individual question. It depends on your situation, how you feel, and medical recommendations.
Regarding donkey milk: It is not a special pregnancy product. We do not promise that it improves nutrient supply during pregnancy or supports mother and child in any special way. If you are considering drinking donkey milk, discuss it beforehand with your doctor or midwife. Also, follow the storage and preparation instructions on the label.
What is in donkey milk
So you can assess what you are drinking, here are the approximate values per 100 ml:
- Energy: around 35–45 kcal
- Fat: about 0.3–1.8 g, usually under 1 g
- Protein: about 1.5–1.9 g
- Lactose: about 6–7 g
- Calcium: about 60–90 mg
Donkey milk naturally contains lysozyme and lactoferrin. We list these as ingredients, not as a promise of an effect. Important: Donkey milk contains milk protein and more lactose than cow's milk (about 4.7 g per 100 ml). If you have a milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance, please consult your doctor to determine whether donkey milk is suitable for you. More details in the article Ingredients and nutritional values of donkey milk.
Breastfeeding: donkey milk is not a substitute for breast milk
One point is particularly important to us: donkey milk is not a substitute for breast milk or infant formula. We do not recommend it for infants – neither as an alternative nor mixed with breast milk.
If breastfeeding is not going as desired, this is a situation that requires professional support. Your midwife, a breastfeeding consultant, or your pediatrician can support you. Donkey milk is not a solution for this.
Whether you as a breastfeeding mother would like to drink donkey milk yourself is a question of your own diet. The same applies here: speak with your doctor or midwife beforehand. We make no statements about whether donkey milk affects milk production or breastfeeding.
Why we do not show testimonials
Our earlier article contained statements from mothers. We have removed them. Especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding, individual experiences can easily be misunderstood as recommendations. Every situation is different, and dietary questions during this time belong in the hands of professionals – not in advertising copy.
Skincare during pregnancy
Some women like to use skincare products during pregnancy that leave a pleasant feeling on the skin. Cosmetics with donkey milk care for the skin, moisturize it, and make it supple. These are cosmetic properties – not statements about changes in the skin during pregnancy. If you are unsure during pregnancy which skincare is right for you, speak with your doctor or midwife. You can always find the ingredients on the label. Read more about skincare in the article Donkey milk in skincare.
If you would like to try donkey milk after consultation
If you have spoken with your doctor or midwife and would like to try donkey milk, the usual instructions apply: Store frozen donkey milk at −18 °C and thaw it slowly in the refrigerator at 2–7 °C. Follow the preparation and consumption instructions on the label.
In short
- Donkey milk is a food product and not a special product for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- Before consumption during pregnancy and breastfeeding: consult your doctor or midwife.
- Follow the storage and preparation instructions on the label.
- Donkey milk is not a substitute for breast milk or infant formula.
